When you think of delicious, nutritious sardines, you likely picture the silvery fish themselves. But have you ever considered the silent guardian that delivers them to your plate in perfect condition? The humble can is a marvel of modern food engineering. At KENALE FOOD, we believe that quality begins long before the sardines are caught-it starts with the creation of a pristine, safe, and durable container. Let's explore the fascinating journey of how an empty can is born and why it's absolutely essential for preserving the superb quality of our canned sardines.

The Birth of a Can – A Journey of Precision and Care
The production of our empty cans is a highly automated, multi-step process designed to ensure absolute hygiene and structural integrity. It all begins with a coil of specially coated steel called tinplate. This material is ideal because it's strong, formable, and the thin layer of tin provides excellent corrosion resistance, preventing the steel from reacting with the fish.

The massive coil is fed into a press that stamps out circular discs, known as "blanks." Each blank is then fed into a cupping press. With immense pressure, the press "draws" the flat disc into a shallow cup-the first shape that resembles a can.

The cup is then forced through a series of rings called "ironing rings." This process stretches and thins the walls of the cup to the desired height while leaving the base thick and strong. Simultaneously, the bottom is shaped into the familiar concave dome. This dome is crucial as it adds structural strength, allowing the can to withstand high pressure during processing and storage.

The newly formed can body is thoroughly cleaned and dried. Then, a special food-grade epoxy phenolic lacquer is applied to the interior and baked on. This lining is a critical safety feature. It creates an inert barrier between the sardines and the metal, ensuring no metallic taste is transferred and protecting the fish from any potential interaction with the can.

The Can End the Double Seam, the lid, or "end," is manufactured separately with a key feature: a rubber-like sealing compound nestled in its curl. The final, crucial step is double seaming. The can body, now filled with sardines, is fitted with the end. A seaming machine rolls the edge of the can body and the flange of the end together, creating an airtight, hermetic double seam. This seal is what locks in freshness and keeps out microorganisms, making the canned sardines shelf-stable.
So, why is this meticulously made can so important for your sardines? It's not just a container; it's a preservation system.

Superior Preservation: The hermetic seal created by the double seaming process locks out air, light, and bacteria. This allows us to sterilize the contents through a controlled cooking process (retorting) inside the can. The result? Sardines are preserved without the need for artificial preservatives.

Protection from Light and Oxygen: Sardines are rich in delicate omega-3 fatty acids, which can be damaged by oxygen and light (oxidation and rancidity). The opaque, airtight can acts as a perfect shield, protecting these valuable nutrients and ensuring you get the full health benefits with every bite.

Maintaining Freshness and Flavor: By creating a sterile environment, the can captures the sardines at their peak freshness. The can's interior lining ensures that the natural, delicate flavor of the fish remains pure, with no "metallic" aftertaste.

Safety and Durability: The strong tinplate body and domed bottom ensure the can can be safely handled, transported, and stacked without damage, guaranteeing the product's safety from our factory to your pantry.
